I was going through my backlog of RSS feeds and found this beauty of a Flickr set: Mii Madness: The Office
Just tried out the new Internet Channel on the Wii to see what I could do on Vox. I signed into Vox and while loading the Vox homepage, the Wii froze up. I could not turn off the Wii with the power switch. I could not turn off the Wiimote with the power button. It just sat there, hung.
I expected this since the Internet Channel is still in beta and it uses the Opera browser. I don't think Vox currently plays well with the Opera browser on the PC side anyway. It's unfortunate that the Wii completely locks up because I will be less apt to check out what sites do work on the Wii.
Image below is the last thing I saw before I pulled the plug on the Wii.
Head on down to flickr and check this photoset out. Make sure you read the Kotaku article first.
Classic stuff. Thanks Kelev T. Cat for the heads up.
After a busy Sunday, I got a solid three hours to check out the new Zelda game for the Wii. Without giving too much away, I met Zelda, got to play as a wolf, and finally transitioned from peasant Link to Mack Daddy Link. The graphics are definitely not next generation, but they are not an eyesore either. They don't detract from the game play so the fact that Nintendo has gone down the game play over graphics path does not hurt this game. As for the control scheme, it's fairly simple to pick up quick. Swing the wiimote for a horizontal slash, hold the Z-button on the nunchuck and perform the same swing motion for vertical slash, and hold the Z-button while slightly pressing forward on the analog stick and preform the swing motion for a stab. The spin attack is performed by shaking the nunchuck. So it is quite simple to pull off a slash-slash-spin attack combo. I don't know why they didn't map the vertical slash to an up-down motions (or vise versa) and the stab to an outward stabbing motion, but they must have had their reasons. Still, the swordplay becomes second nature after 5 minutes. Aiming your "precision" weapons can be done with the Wiimote and it is so much easier than aiming with an analog stick. Just point and click.
The one thing that I don't like about the game is the audio coming from the Wiimote. It just sounds too loud and tinny. There is no option to control the volume coming out of the Wiimote, which is something that I would really would have like to have had. While playing a game of Tennis in Wii Sports, the sound of the ball hitting a racket coming out of the Wiimote is awesome, so I can't blame substandard speaker equipment in the controller. That was pretty much the only thing that bugged me about the game and after a while, it really didn't bother me.
So last night when I went to pick up my Wii, everyone in line was picking up the same thing: console, extra Wiimote, extra nunchuck, and Zelda. As a fanboy, it takes some serious effort to make a Zelda game that I don't want to play. I had to stop playing (due to the hour), but I was compelled to play on. So far, I am hooked on both Zelda and the Wii experience.
I need to be hitting the bed but I did spend around 2 hours with it this evening. I only spent time with Wii Sports because opening Zelda would have had me stay up all night. Setup was intuitive. There was some decision making required on whether to setup the sensor avec ou sans sensor stand. I opted for the sensor stand. Once that, it was some wireless LAN trickery with my router to make sure the Wii's MAC address was on the access list and I was ready to go.
Tennis was a blast, but its a bit strange having your players movements being controlled for you. You pretty much control the timing and the pace of the swing. The tennis is solely 2v2 and playing single player has you control both players. I still need to work out the nuances of pulling off a lob and a low shot, but it was good fun.
Next up was bowling. OMG. I love bowling, both in real life and in virtual life. Up here in Massachusetts, they have some perversion of bowling called candle pin. I grew up playing 10 pin and finding 10 pin in Massachusetts that is inexpensive is a difficult task. Bowling, in Wii Sports, is so much fun. It was awkward at first, since I kept wanting to walk forward but I learned to just take a single step forward to during the arm swing to get the timing down. The Wii also captures that fact that I always seems to have the ball tail off to the left in real life. Luckily, I could compensate and rock the lanes. My current high score is a 203.
Baseball was next. It was okay. I won the game with an awesome 6 run inning. It really didn't float my boat like bowling.
Lastly was golf. This game is going to seriously mess up my golf swing. It wouldn't let me follow through with the shots. Every time I did, it had me overpowering the ball with and hooking or slicing. With more practice, I should get better at it, but it really doesn't feel like the real thing, like tennis and bowling did. I am going to be a mess tomorrow with the usually busy Sunday zaniness and hopefully I will sneak some Zelda in.
So the alarm went off at 5:15 am. I reconsidered the 5 am thought and gave myself an extra 15 minutes. I hit the snooze alarm once and decided if it was really worth getting up to do this. I checked the outdoor temp and it was a warm 44 degrees. So I unplugged all the portable systems from their chargers and headed out the door. I only forgot one thing, my baseball cap. Luckily, all I would need is my woolie so it was not missed. Before I headed out the door, I decided to take a miz_ginevra "why the hell am I up picture".
I get to the parking lot and to my surprise I see no one infront of the door. As I approached, there were 3 people there. That meant I was going to be fourth in line. OMG, I am so getting a Wii. I park, grab the Daddy Diaper Bag and camping chair and claim my spot with the other 3. One of the great thing about being in line for a nintendo product preorder is that there is going to be DSs in the line, which means multiplayer games. We played Mario Kart, Tetris, and Metroid Pinball which was a blast. I learned how much I suck at Tetris (I blame the early hour) and how hard it is to steer a Mario kart in 46 degree weather. I showed off Loco Roco on the PSP and another guy and I swapped DS games to demo them while we waited. If it were not for the portable systems, I would have not have had as much fun. The manager of the store showed up around 8 am and hung out with us. They had 17 units for preorder and by 8 am, each unit was accounted for. So there you go, made some friends and got my hands on a Wii. Time to take a nap.
